How about moving to Portugal and benefitting from a favorable NHR tax regime?

Updated: Oct 17, 2023

Portugal has established for a while a special fiscal regime for the so-called non-habitual residents (NHR), offering special tax incentives in high value-added activities.

NHR

The Personal Income Tax for NHR is a very attractive one for entrepreneurs, independent professionals, pensioners, or HNWI that consider becoming a tax resident in Portugal. All individuals (independently of their nationality) can benefit from the NHR tax regime provided that they have not been tax residents in Portugal for the previous 5 years, which is granted for a 10 consecutive years period irrespective of any changes in the tax law.

This means you can benefit from the total exemption of personal income tax or pay a flat rate of 10% or 20%, depending on the irrespective source of your income, for 10 years in a row.

To apply for the NHR tax regime you need to become a tax resident in Portugal, meaning you need to spend at least 183 days in the country.

Besides, Portugal does not tax wealth, and all gifts and inheritances to spouses, descendants, or ascendants are tax-exempt, independently of the amount.

All considered Portugal is a white-listed friendly tax country in the EU for professionals, families, pensioners, investors, and HNWI. Whether combined with a golden visa or not, the NHR tax regime is worth considering.
