Portugal Golden Visa: Who Are The Portuguese And Why It Matters

Updated: Oct 17, 2023

Investing in Portugal

Everyone has their own reasons to consider a Portugal Golden Visa, but you can rest assured your money will not be put to waste. Think of it as an investment into a backdoor to Portugal citizenship, therefore European citizenship.

This means traveling freely across most of Europe, visa-free travel to more than 180 countries worldwide, access to public services like health care, and education, or simply choosing to live in a country that is sunny most of the year, not to mention one of the safest in the world. But most of these conditions must be attributed to its people.

“A country’s history as a whole defines its soul.”

The Portuguese Soul

It’s not possible to dissociate this country from its soul - the Portuguese people. Those are the ones who make this country so interesting.

There’s an old saying about the Portuguese that we've all heard most of our lives and is supposed to have been said by a roman general in the 3rd century - “They don't govern themselves nor let anyone else do it, either.”

No matter when it was said, it’s true to this day.

Acquiring Portugal Golden Visa makes you a part of Portugal's history. A history of travelers, immigrants, and explorers. And that’s why its people are so welcoming.

A country’s history as a whole defines its soul.

In our prime, the Portuguese empire included countries in South America (Brazil), East Asia (Macao and Nagasaki), Africa (Mozambique, Angola, São Tomé e Principe, and Cape Verde), and the Indian sub-continent (like Goa, Colombo, and Cochin).

This begs the question: How did such a small country achieve so much? The answer is what still defines us as a people to this day - patriotism, faith, courage, and diplomacy.

In short, Portuguese people love their country, believe in God and if diplomacy fails, dare to stand their ground. But they always seek diplomacy first.

They know what it’s like to be an immigrant and are very welcoming toward them.

Today, there are about 250 million Portuguese speakers on the planet, but only 10 of them, live in Portugal, which speaks to the worldly character of the Portuguese.

Not only that, but they are naturally curious too, and love to speak other languages.

However, their best quality is solidarity. Portuguese people genuinely care about others’ well-being.

The typical Portuguese women are such warm natural nurturers with so much character and personality, that Portuguese men tend to become “mama's boys” their whole lives.

“Some say Fado is not just music, it’s a soul condition, a way of living.”

Portuguese Fado Music

Fado music is an open window to get a glimpse of this “soul”. Some say Fado is not just music, it’s a soul condition, a way of living.

This music style is traditionally performed by a singer and two guitarists.

It is attributed to sailors singing from their ship's bows in the 19th century. Maybe that’s why it usually speaks about hope, longing, nostalgia, lost lovers, love, and the bohemian lifestyle.

However, different styles of Fado, voice different types of emotions and contexts.

These are the most famous ones.

  • Fado Marinheiro (Sailor Fado) - sung by sailors. It’s considered the very first style.

  • Fado de Coimbra (Coimbra city Fado) - Sung by the University of Coimbra students. Mostly about love and their (bohemian) lifestyle.

  • Fado de Lisboa (Lisbon city Fado) - Sung in Lisbon's oldest neighborhoods, like Alfama, Mouraria, or Madragoa. Mostly about love, tragedy, longings, and life.

  • Fado “Corrido” - Lighter and joyful. Also nicknamed “Fadinho” (I.e. small Fado).

  • Fado Vadio - More of an amateur fado, with singers singing with an open soul and an open heart.

  • Fado Menor (Minor Fado) - Sad and melancholic and probably one of the most sung styles.

"People who still say good morning to strangers"

Afterall

At the end of the day, a country is its people, and considering a Portugal Golden Visa not only is business savvy but also brings you and your family (if that’s the case) closer to people who still say “good morning” to strangers, who worry about others, who don't look away when a child is crying, and who will (almost) give you a city tour if you ask for directions.
