This music style is traditionally performed by a singer and two guitarists.
It is attributed to sailors singing from their ship's bows in the 19th century. Maybe that’s why it usually speaks about hope, longing, nostalgia, lost lovers, love, and the bohemian lifestyle.
However, different styles of Fado, voice different types of emotions and contexts.
These are the most famous ones.
Fado Marinheiro (Sailor Fado) - sung by sailors. It’s considered the very first style.
Fado de Coimbra (Coimbra city Fado) - Sung by the University of Coimbra students. Mostly about love and their (bohemian) lifestyle.
Fado de Lisboa (Lisbon city Fado) - Sung in Lisbon's oldest neighborhoods, like Alfama, Mouraria, or Madragoa. Mostly about love, tragedy, longings, and life.
Fado “Corrido” - Lighter and joyful. Also nicknamed “Fadinho” (I.e. small Fado).
Fado Vadio - More of an amateur fado, with singers singing with an open soul and an open heart.
Fado Menor (Minor Fado) - Sad and melancholic and probably one of the most sung styles.
